Anyone interested?

Hi folks. I am working on Core D with my daughter and have really tried taking quite a bit of time for Canadian History this semester. We are going to through 'the story of Canada' and are working learning about the first explorers as well as the First Nations.

I would like to arrange a field trip to a reserve. I don't have one in mind, and am open to suggestions. I am in the Ottawa area.

I would call ahead and see if someone would be interested in meeting with us, letting us come to their reserve and take an hour or two to teach our kids about some of the great things of their people. Whether it be things now adays or long ago, I really want our kids to develop a sense of respect for the First Nations people .

I am wondering if anyone would like to join me? I am open to driving a ways (not a overnight trip but a day trip.)

Contact me if you are interested.

thanks,.

Laura

Sounds like a great idea! I wish we were closer and freer to do that!

When I was in college, I spent a month (I think! It was a long time ago) on Manitoulin Island, visiting different schools on the reserves there. It was sort of a major field trip for me as an elementary education major. It was a great time!

Manitoulin Island, I have heard is quite a success story in the way they are careful to preserve their culture and also how they are doing well as a reserve.

Was that your experience too?

It seemed to me to be so but my experience there was in the mid 1980s. It seems like another life altogether!

I am from Ottawa but living in the Middle East. For the life of me, I can't think of any reserves nearby.

There is one down the 401 toward Toronto - I have stopped to eat at it and get gas. They have a casino :D

There are lots of stuff in the Peterborough area- marks on rocks, Indian Craft Centre etc. (near Buckhorn?)

Also the Museum in Hull - Civilization - is good. Lots of stuff there.

Will try to think of more. Just a bit foggy at the moment (it's almost midnight here)

Deanne,

I really like your suggestions, that seems like a good direction to go. Do you know how I can find out if there is anything happening there? Is there a general website?

thanks,

Laura
